What is John Stanier listening to???

Stanier and Pat

While we were in New York, we had to see if John was around. It just so happened he was in town and working on the new Battles record. It's in the very early stages of the album, but I seriously can not wait to hear some samples or a track or something!!! Battles is definitely pushing the boundaries of modern music and the concept of this super group remains to be unparalleled.

We met up for beers in Brooklyn and had some time to catch up with John. He's been living part time in Germany where I am sure he can unwind from all the touring. Battles has been just about everywhere these past few years. We talked for a good hour and the conversation ranged from life to music and both. John frequents the MONOlog and I asked him to spit some records he is listening to at the moment. Here they are:

John Stanier

1. St. Ides - Rap Commercial Compilation
Who remembers these commercials? Freaking classic!

2. Ibiza Voice - Podcast
John likes his techno and it really shows in his playing. He destroys those beats.

3. Mutek - Podcast
In 2007, MUSIQUE RISQUÉE became the official label of the MUTEK organization, replacing MUTEK_REC. For years, these two prestigious techno imprints have been on a similar musical path and have shared many of the same artists. The union of the two imprints only makes official what has been happening naturally for years.

Musique Risquée has picked up the fine catalog and hard-earned efforts of the festival’s pre-existing MUTEK_REC label and combined them with its own catalog.

4. RA: Resident Advisor - Podcast
The dance and electronic music magazine has a podcast that will feature a DJ mix, roughly one-hour long from artists across a variety of genres. All mixes are provided by the artists exclusively for RA.

5. Aerosmith - Draw the Line
Released in 1977. This album was fabulous, so iconic that there is no mention of the bands name on the album cover.

John if you are reading this...you need to get us a copy of that recording with the crazy guy that loves metal...you know.

The Roots @ Highline Ballroom, NYC 4/21/09

We were there. So was Dice Raw. Damn this was a show that anticipation was meant for. I don't know how much of their set is scripted, but the improv that comes from the Roots is a thing of beauty. The Roots have been giving it to us live for a long time now, but the format of these Tuesday night jams are ridiculous. You never know who is going to show up. Talib Kweli? Sure!

The Roots @ Highline, NYC

The place was darn near packed so large that I thought my wallet had been lifted a few times. I was glad to be in the front where all action was to take place. Whipped out my camera to shoot a few frames. Captain Kirk was pretty much on fire that night. It was MC after MC spilling out onto stage.

Hey those of you in NYC, you better tell your friends about the rest of these shows. They won't last long with only 14 on bill. I'd say they are half over and you don't want to miss out.

Steve Vai shows some love

When Guitar World arrived this month we thought we saw our GS1 Strap on the cover, attached to none other than Steve Vai! But we weren't positive. Then we opened to page 55 - BLAM! Looking sharp, Steve. Thanks for the shoutout. (Great article too.)

After claiming our bags at Charles Degaulle Airport , the mono bag sits perfectly atop the complementary international luggage cart. Other bags look downright jealous. I am so tired right now i can't write anymore.

My mono bag, with its protective padding and structure doubles as a pillow on the 4 hour train ride from Paris to Limoge. I am so jet-laged i don't even realize im drooling- thank god for water resistant!

DAY 2
HOTEL

We just returned from an amazing meal at a Michelin rated restaurant called Amphitryon. We ate there last night as well, and i must say it is AMAZING. The food is superb and the wait staff is professional as well as friendly. Last night i had a four corse with filet of veal and today filet of duck. If you happen to be in the area, visit this restaurant! my suggestion is go for lunch, for 25 euro you can have a 3 corse meal, this is so cheep for a Michelin rated restaurant- in Paris it would be a 120 dollar meal- at least. Another mention worthy restaurant is La Table Jean, although more country style its presentation is great, and the wine sauce they have is incredable. Now I am going into a food coma, and have to lay down for an afternoon sitsta. My bag sits next to my lap top where i was working on a new song, an inspiring back drop of french rooftops, is the perfect artist atmosphere.

DAY 3
HOTEL

I may not be the most organized person (ask my mom) but the mono bag seems to keep me organized no matter what!
what's in my bag currently:

left side pocket:
when you are a touring musician its hard to eat on a regular basis, and eat healthy, I keep fruit and nuts stored so i can get a quick pick me up, or curb my hunger.
Currently; kiwis, almonds, orbitz gum, orange, dark choclate

left front pocket:

I have some many gadgets and cords fro them, i use this pocket for my small electronics such as my phone and ipod, as well as storing their chargers and my laptop charger.

right front pocket:
i consider myself easygoing girl except when it come to make up. I have on obsession with Sephora, and will not leave the house with out mascara on! This pocket is devoted, and filled to the brim with makeup.
Currently; Sanitis skin care (another sponsor)- Moister Mist- PeptiDerm Anti Aging serum- Topical C, Ponds on-the-go face wipes, Degree travel sized Deodorant, Buxom Lash Bare Minerals Mascara, NARS Cream Blush in Cactus Flower, Vincent Longo Body Bronzer in Cassata, Bobbi Brown Shimmer Brick in PINK, NYC Liquid eyeliner in Black, Covergirl Tinted moisture, Buxom Lips Bare Minerals in Bambi, Sephora Brand coverup, Urban Decay eye Shadow in Peace. wheew!

right side pocket:
Another one of my weakness is caffeine. I love coffee and tea, and always seem to be sipping on something. It's hard to find coffee to-go in many european countries, and it's just more eco-friendly to bring your own mug!
Currently; XOX mug- its lock and seal- LEAK PROOF.

hidden inside pocket:
As Adam Sandler say in the "Hot Chick", "you can stick your weed in there", this would be a great place to hide your stash, but too bad for me i don't smoke, anything, so this pocket is devoted to sharpies, felt tip markers, and HB pencils.
I love to sketch, and Im an avid list maker (can you tell?).

main pocket:
this is where i keep my wallet, glasses, vitamins and prescriptions, sketch books, and any other random things i might need when i don't have access to my checked luggage.

lap-top pocket:
ummm, my lap top.

back pocket:
I keep my tour itineraries, contact information, maps, and tickets in this pocket, it has easy access which means i don't have to dig around for them when im boarding planes, trains, or looking for directions.

BACK STAGE

the WIFI connection in the hotel was not working, so in attempt to keep connected to my life, and my facebook account, i took my laptop to the gig in hopes that the preforming arts center we were playing had wireless. Well they didn't have wifi, but they did have ethernet. Success!

TRAIN STATION
DAY 4

I didn't sleep a wink last night, i tossed and turned for hours until my wake up call at 7am. I didn't relies that the reason for lack of sleep was the 3 espresso that i had with dinner and after dinner in the dressing room. Not sleeping was a small price to pay for being awake during the gig last night. Traveling over seas is so hard some times! Well continuing on... waiting for the train seemed to take hours though it was only about 20mins, but i was so wrecked/ tired/ freezing that it seemed to take forever. When we gout on the train i passed out on my mono bag again. It really is quite comfortable. The only time i woke up was when i had to pee- got to love the 32 OZ evain water!

DAY 4
Hotel Lobby

for some reason we had to wait an observantly long time for our hotel room to be ready, so we went for a walk, ate lunch, stopped at an antique music store, and had coffee and my all time favorite desert Macaroons. Upon our return we had to wait a few more minuets, which was ok because we ran into Ben Lee at the concierge (Australian singer made famous by dating Clair Danes). The Hotel is an amazing Boutique hotel in the hear of the Beastie, super posh and quaint- a well kept secret- so i wont mention the name. HA. But anyway i feel so chic with my mono bag, it defiantly fits in to the modern decor of the hotel lobby.

DAY 4
Hotel Room

So... 3 hours into our stay in Paris and i have managed to trash my room- not literally, but there are socks, musical instruments, and diet coke bottles strung about. Im waiting for Otis (my dad/ band leader) to finish up an interview, then its off to the Sunset for a sound check, dinner, then gig. Shamika Copeland is also playing in Pairs and we might swing by after our show to say hi. She is one of the nicest blues women I know, and i always enjoy chatting with her, she is my like my big (blues) sister! So my hair is done and yes, i am wearing leather pants, the top i have on is a vintage Taos T-shirt i found at a thrift store- thrifting is a hobby of mine. So im about to run off to the gig, i hope it goes well-

Day 5
Fast Train to Amsterdam

Im on the fast train to amsterdam, and with the 6 hours i slept last night all i want to do is sleep. Its been a whirlwind trip thus far, and although i am having a great time, i just wish i could have an extra day to sleep in a relax. The hotel last night was amazing, but of corse the general rule on tour is "the nicer it is the shorter your stay". The gig last night was successful,Shamika Copeland came to sound check and did a bit of jamming. We also had a bit of time to talk after the sound check and got some great advice from her. Another highlight of the gig was I got to open both sets with solo, and play some of my own stuff. I got some great feed back from the promotors and paris publicity crew. Hopeful in a year or so i will be back in paris preforming with my own band.

Day 8
Paris Hotel, and Terrace

SO...... Amsterdam was OUT of control. I don't know where to start. We arrived in Amsterdam by train at 2pm or (14:00), and from the train we went to the hotel. We stayed at the NH hotels, its super new and modern. When your on the road as a traveling musician i can't tell you how nice it is to have a good bed to sleep in, as well as good food.
Then after we checked in we went on a boat ride thought the canals of amsterdam. If you happen to be traveling to Amsterdam, defiantly make sure to take a ride in a boat. You get to see so much more architecture, and sights! After that we went to a traditional dutch bar, and after we had dinner at the "Five Flys" a super nice restaurant where we had for courses and where i got to try the traditional dutch liquor Jenever, which tasted like a cross between sake and gin. After dinner (around 11:30 they eat super late) I went to a HUGE latin Techno dance fest (like 10,000 people) and i danced all night long. The next day we went to our gig and played at a beautiful renovated warehouse. After we played there was a awesome reggae band with Traditional african drummers, who had drums on their heads and danced around. Then after a huge communal Thai BBQ with the promotors and some new friends. Then early in the morning we work up and got on the train to france. Now I am sitting in the hotel blogging some more. In a little bit im going to walk around and maybe try and find an H&M- which happens to be my guilty pleasure.

Day 10
Back Home

what a day,
started out in Paris, and am now 5,000 miles away, back home in Boulder Colorado. It feels good to finally be home, but i am so tired that i can't really wright anything now... more later...

Later....
ok, so i must say the Mono Case is amazing, not only did it protect my stuff, remain seemingly durable, fit in every overhead compartment, and under airplane seats, but keep me organized, but it was so easy to carry around. It is a great investment to have as a touring musician, and i reckon that it would be if you were a graphic designer, artist, or just in an everyday commute to work. I have traveled with every kind of bag there is, laptop, duffel, rolling, side-bag, purse, and non of them ever seemed to do the job and stay chic. But the mono bag did all that. My trip was amazing and i can''t wait to return to europe, and to use my mono bag. The next stop in our tour in Memphis May 6th, and you can bet you butt that I'm bring the bag.

800beloved.

I have been listening to this band the entire day. 800beloved hails from Michigan, but they their sound is so reminiscent of 80's bands from the UK. The Cure, New Order comes to mind right away. Peter Hook bass lines all over the place...brilliant!!! "Bouquet" really hits the spot after a few listens. I am reminded all throughout it's playtime that nostalgia is a thing of beauty. So if you are a fan of shoegaze, dreampop, and post-rock...you will enjoy the sounds of 800beloved.

You are listening to:

1. 800beloved - Colours
2. 800beloved - Your High School Photo
3. 800beloved - Show Me Evil

MONO/WMC Journal: Day 3...the day of Ultra

So we are up at...12? or somewhere around there. It's definitely noon. Getting to bed at 5am is weird, feels like college all over again. So it's time to grab some food and meet up with Steve Aoki. We get to the hotel and wait in the lobby. They have sharks in the tank all along the wall. This is a nice ass hotel.

Waiting for Aoki

Steve meets up with us, he's got some killer new things going on with Dim Mak. We can't disclose any of those here, but they are pretty big. We'll be speaking with him in the future about other "things".

D with Steve Aoki

It's now time to head over to Ultra. I don't think we know what we are getting ourselves into. When I first heard mention of it, I thought it was some nightclub. YEAH, I WAS WRONG! It's starting to heat up a bit, definitely the hottest day so far. It's still really nice outside though. We've got press and VIP passes so we can bypass going through the entire festival and get golf carted to the Carl Cox tent. We have a meeting with Moby when we get there.

D with Moby

D with Moby

Conversation is super tough especially being right behind the tent. It is ridiculously loud in there.

Carl comes out to meet us. He really really digs the products.

Carl Cox

D with Carl Cox

I decide to enter the pit to take a few shots. I am soooo glad I have earplugs. The mains are right next to pit so passing by them you can feel the air being pushed so much so that it vibrates your entire body. I swear I felt my colon shake. Erick Morillo is up and he is a favorite over here. Moby goes on next and pumps the crowd up.

MONO/WMC Journal: Day 2

We're finally up at around 10am, that's 7am on the west coast so we're feeling it. Time to meet up with Jenn, Mark Lewis, and Mike Burns for a little breakfast/lunch. Today is going to be kind of crazy and ridiculous as we have a very packed schedule. It's off to Raleigh Hotel to meet with DJ Ferry Corsten who is spinning at a private event on the rooftop.

DJ Ferry Corsten

Armani is spotting the event.

Armani Exchange private party

We get word that Carl Cox is interested in meeting up, no cameras allowed. We'll get our shot tomorrow. We hang for a bit at the Armani event and then head over to Remix.

There we meet up with DJ Reza who loves the Producer bag we show him. This guy is spot on with his remarks about the case and we are glad he has it in his hands now. Besides being a stellar DJ, Reza is an all around great guy. Definitely someone you want on your side.

Remix @ WMC 2009

Shots of some of the partying happening at Remix.

Remix @ WMC 2009

We decide to skip the first day of Ultra because we know tonight is going to be something special. We have an event that is really sparking our interest. Fergie's Bday bash at Dolce is going on and we've got ourselves in. VIP all the way with Taboo, APL, and Will.

Black Eyed Peas @ Dolce

We also got to meet up with Steve Aoki who wants to get together tomorrow morning at 2pm. The life of a clubber is really interesting. Too bad none of the restaurants cater to "clubbing" patrons and serve breakfast past 11am. Gotta find a place that does breakfast all day...Miami, throw us some love!!!

MONO/WMC Journal: Day 1

We have a lay over in Austin Texas. The ride is really bumping and it feels like our jet is taking a hit from some bad weather. We land into Austin with people feeling like poo, but I hear they have great BBQ there! We decide not to get off the plane for the half hour that we will be there. Are we there yet???

Miami awaits us and when we land, I can already feel the weather is way more tropic. Ft Lauderdale airport is a mad house. We grab a cab and head to Fountaine Bleau and when we get there...this awaits us.

View from the deck.

Time to crash and sleep with the deck door open. The sound of the ocean...ahhhhhh. Tomorrow is going to be C-R-A-Z-Y.
